ERNEST SHONEKAN

Ernest Shonekan is a Nigerian businessman and millionaire who served as the Nigerian Interim President from 26 August to 17 November, 1993. He became the Nigerian President after the then military head of state General Ibrahim Babangida step aside due to the pressure from Nigerians since the annulment of the June 12 Presidential election.

In Nigeria, Ernest Shonekan remained one of the respected Nigerian national leaders and businessmen.

Early Life Ernest Shonekan

Ernest Shonekan was born in Lagos on 9 May 1936. He attended Church Missionary Society (CMS) Boys’ Lagos and later Grammar School both in Lagos. He also attended the University of London where he studied law.

Business Career

In 1964, Ernest Shonekan entered into business activities where he joined the UAC of Nigeria Ltd. In the company, he served as the legal assistant until 1967. Between 1967 to 1973, he served as the assistant legal adviser. Between 1974 to 1975, he became the deputy legal adviser. Finally, in 1975, he became the legal adviser of the UAC Company. He remained in the position until 1978.

In January 1980, Shonekan became the overall chairman of the UAC of Nigeria.

Transitional Government

On 26 August, 1993, the then Nigerian military president General Ibrahim Babangida resigned from the power due to the pressure on him since the annulment of the June 12 election. In filling the vacant seat, Ernest Shonekan who was already serving as the head of government affairs under Babangida was asked to be the interim president.

Shhonekan inherited the leadership of Nigeria when the country was in political crisis. Also, due to the cancellation of the June 12 election, there was an economic sanction imposed on Nigeria by the western powers. Therefore, Shonekan was to faced the huge task. However, after about three months as the Interim President, some army officers led by General Sani Abacha removed shonekan from power on 17 November, 1993.
